ORIENTAL - Historically referencing anything east of Istanbul to China, this broad term encompasses an equally vast range of the woven arts. From the Turkish highlands, throughout Persia and the Caucasus then onto the Indian sub-continent, the Oriental carpet is a decorative narrative of conquest, religious migration and ethnic identity.

For design purposes, oriental carpets are best divided into traditional and tribal categories. Traditional carpets can be then further subdivided into city (formal) carpets and village (informal) carpets. City carpets generally feature more complicated designs, technical superiority and were often produced for export or on specific commission by established workshops. Important Persian formal rugs include such examples as Tabriz, Kerman, Meshed, Tehran, Fereghan Sarouk and Kashan. Indian treasures such as Agra and Amritsar would also be considered formal woven examples. Their informal counterparts vary widely but oftentimes have larger scales, grand designs and feature stylized nomadic motifs. Village carpets include Sultanabad, Serapi, Heriz, Bakshaiesh, Hamadan, Bijar and Oushak.
