SPANISH HAND-KNOT - Spanish weaving represents one of the oldest documented craft traditions in Europe. Though ample evidence points to a developed weaving culture by the 13th century, it was only through the technical expertise introduced by Moorish artisans during the great conquests that the art form fully developed. Paying tribute to classical Islamic standards, repetitive tile patterns, elaborate border panels and modified mihrab elements dominated the artistic landscape until the 15th century when Christian influences turned the design focus toward a more European aesthetic. This renaissance brought about the soft palette and architectural appeal synonymous with Spanish weavings today.
