AUBUSSON - Elegant and refined with exquisite detail, Aubusson is a flat-woven carpet in the tapestry tradition. Located 200 miles outside of Paris on the river Creuse, the 15th century weaving ateliers of Aubusson enjoyed the height of decorative mastery in the mid 18th century as the aristocracy, seeking to enjoy the same luxury as the royal court, commissioned fine floor-coverings to grace their grand public halls and private residences.

While early Aubusson carpets often expressed modified oriental motifs, many resembling the repeating medallions of Oushak design reminiscent of their Moorish descent, tastes soon adopted the floral arrangements popular to the era, accented with military and heraldic references. Well framed, with grand, architectural rhythm these treasures offer timeless appeal for traditional interiors as well as a refreshing juxtaposition to more contemporary designs.
