The weaving tradition in the Iberian Peninsula has long and varied antecedents. Ultimately, this design derives from a rich velvet textile, part of a lively luxury trade between Turkey, Italy and Spain dating from the Middle Ages. Here, curved lines have been made angular in schematic leaf devices in diagolnal lines, caught in the intersections by lobed diamonds with interior rayed crosses. In the ivory of the diamonds on this trellis, all the motifs are plants or suggestions of bouquets that rest on small bases and are framed by a garland of floral conceits. The strong meander, composed of "S" shapes that end in charming small leaves could appear on an ancient mosaic. A striking component of this carpet is the ivory of the ground in contrast to the motifs in a shade of carnelian - evoking sumptuous velvet.
