At its widest extant, Ottoman Turkey extended to Hungary, the various countries that used to be knwn as Yugoslavia, and they tried hard, in tow sieges of Vienna in the 17th century to conquer Austria. As the Ottoman empire withdrew, and Turkey changed forever in 1922, all sorts of influence remained behind them, such as the croissant named after the second event in Vienna, and other delicious cuisine. And in several areas of "European Turkey", remained a tradition of much appreciated flat woven rugs, and this example is of exceptional size. this group is known for a plain background, quite frequently black, and here, in this example, the different dye lots of wool used has changed with age, and this result is called abrash. In three vertical rows, exuberant bouquets of a variety of flowers, carnations, roses, tulips, multi petalled blossoms and buds are tied up in bows, or in a simple knot. framing the field is a wheat - colored border, where a slim meander with schematic loops bears flowers and leaves in a simplified garland. The design is paired down, the colors delicate, each bouquet differs and it is no wonder that this group of carpets has its ardent devotees.
